The standard the protection-dog industry would not set itself.
PSSK9™ is the discipline. Sport is the sport. This page names the difference, the credentials, and the ladder.

PSSK9™ is the discipline. Sport is the sport. This page names the difference, the credentials, and the ladder.
The PSSK9™ program exists because the protection-dog industry needed one adult in the room. Not a marketing category. Not another certification patch. A single, coherent standard for what it means to train, place, and stand behind a Professional Special Services Canine — and the humans who work them.
Sport titles are athletic achievements. IPO, Mondio, PSA, Schutzhund — each one measures skill under known conditions with a decoy who has signaled the fight. That is not the same discipline as protection under real conditions, and no one who has done both work is confused about the difference.
PSSK9™ measures the other thing. The thing sport was never designed to test. Behavior under ambiguity. Restraint under provocation. Engagement without command. Disengagement on cue. Composure in the household. Function at the courthouse, the compound, the school, the yacht, the estate. The proof happens where the client actually lives, not where the trial is judged.
“Sport is where the dog performs. PSSK9™ is where the dog performs when no one is watching, no one is judging, and the outcome is not a score — it’s a family member walking away unhurt.”
Professional Special Services Canine is the institutional name for the discipline. It borrows the vocabulary the corrections and government K9 world already uses — Special Services, Special Operations, Special Missions — and applies it to what a small number of private-side programs have quietly been building for decades.
The vocabulary matters because the buyer matters. A principal, an executive, a district attorney, a school administrator, a compound owner — these people already understand what "Special Services" means when a government agency uses it. PSSK9™ gives them the same clarity in the private market.
PSSK9™ credentials are earned in order. There is no shortcut, no legacy grandfathering, and no "professional courtesy" waiver of the required scenarios. The names below are trademarks of K1K9. The work they represent is public.
The individual who can safely operate a PSSK9™ in the environments the dog was placed to protect. Not a trainer — a handler.
The individual who can teach another handler and produce a Handler Certified. Not a decoy — an instructor.
The individual who can develop new instructors, write curriculum, and stand behind a program’s public reputation.
The rarest credential in the ladder. The decoy who can proof any dog against any provocation, at any threshold, under any condition.
A facility is not a certification of its dogs — it is a certification of its program. The facility credential names what the physical location, staff, and doctrine can be trusted to deliver.
Meets the PSSK9™ physical, safety, and documentation standard. May host handler training and refresher work under an outside Master Instructor.
All of the above, plus at least one on-staff Instructor Certified. May run its own handler certification program under audit.
The full PSSK9™ hub for a region. Master Instructor on staff, full credential authority, licensed to represent PSSK9™ to the public.
Naming a standard is inconvenient. It exposes the difference between a program that has done the work and a program that has bought the marketing. That is the point. PSSK9™ is not a friendly credential and it will not be. It is friendly to the buyer, the client, and the household. It is exactly as friendly to the industry as the industry has been to the buyer.
The buyer’s protection is more important than the seller’s convenience. That is the sentence PSSK9™ is built on.
Before you apply for a credential — any credential — read the Buyer’s Guide. If you are a buyer, it will save you from six figures of regret. If you are an instructor, it will tell you exactly what standard your future certificate will be measured against.
